Artists Paint the Town, Taste of Solomons, Evening Gala, May 12-15

Artwork from the College of Southern Maryland’s Annual Student Juried show will be among featured pieces at “An Affaire of the Arts,” 7:30-9:30 p.m., May 14 at Carmen’s Gallery, Solomons. The event is part of the Solomons Business Association’s Plein Air Street Faire which includes a plein air Quick Draw competition, A Taste of Solomons, Children’s “Paint the Town” and plein air art exhibit and sale at Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Art Center.

Plein air artists will be found painting throughout Solomons and the Dowell community, May 12-15. The term “plein air” comes from the French term “en plein air” which translates as “in the open air.”  Well-known artists, including Claude Monet and Pierre-August Renoir, created some of their best and most famous works in this style.  Thirteen locations around Solomons have been established as areas where the artists (who must pre-register) can paint and visitors can watch the artists at work. Their artwork will be on display and available for sale at Annmarie Gardens, May 15-29.

The Street Faire will offer a variety of events for people of all ages to enjoy on May 14, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. A Children’s “Paint the Town,” includes face painting, theatrical portrayals of strolling artists such as Van Gogh, Monet and others, clowns, vendors and music.

A Taste of Solomons will take place throughout the island and tickets may be purchased at booths located around the Island. Ticket holders will have the availability to sample and experience various Solomons cuisine specialties. Food and drink tickets are $4.

A Quick Draw competition will take place on the Riverwalk where painters will compete in completing a painting in two hours or less, from 2-4 p.m.

The Street Faire closes with a free evening event at Carmen’s Gallery “An Affaire of the Arts” and will include the announcement of the Quick Draw competition award winners and the unveiling of an official limited edition plein air giclee (poster). Proceeds will benefit the 4th of July fireworks event on Solomons Island and a scholarship through the CSM Foundation. The event will include a cash bar, live music and desserts, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The Solomons Business Association’s Plein Air Street Faire is made possible in part by a partnership with the College of Southern Maryland as well as Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center, Asbury - Solomons, Carmen’s Gallery, Holiday Inn, Kim’s Key Lime Pie, Lotus Kitchen and Tiki Bar.
