MSSA Awards 19 College Scholarships
The Scholarship Foundation of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishing Association (MSSA) announced that it has awarded 19 scholarships. A total of $27,300 was distributed for the 2016-17 academic year to students who are committed to learning about the sciences, management, environmental ethics, and other areas that can improve the ecology of the waters and marine life in the region. The winners were selected from a record number of 52 applicants.
The one-year merit-based scholarships range from $1,000- $2,300 apiece, and include 11 students already enrolled in colleges as well as 8 high school students who expect to enroll in the colleges and universities of their choice this Fall. In a letter to students selected, Peter Abbott, President of the Foundation, wrote: “You have been recognized for your overall outstanding achievements, both academic and civic, with a common shared commitment to the improvement and sustainability of the marine resources of the Chesapeake Bay and coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean.”
Two students received special named scholarships. The William Huppert Scholarship, named after the Foundation’s long-term President, was given to Nathan Hirtle, the highest rated college student who will be a junior at Salisbury State University. The Clint Waters Scholarship is a memorial to a long term President of the Dorchester County Chapter of MSSA and leader of the MSSA Board of Directors. It was awarded to Nicholas Conrad, a graduate of Cape Henlopen High School and the top candidate from Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He will attend the University of Delaware as a participant in the Honors Program in Marine Science.
MSSA represents the interests of approximately 6,000 saltwater anglers spanning several states within the watershed of the Chesapeake Bay. In the last 21 years the Scholarship Foundation has now awarded 144 students a total of $337,000, and many of the earlier recipients are today working in education, management, and policy-related fields providing leadership for a sustainable marine environment.
